Being popular in school, being sought after by the ladies and having several athletic awards are just some of the benefits of being a high school quarterback. In the NFL, the quarterback would play a very significant role and it is his job to set up plays for them to score. An elite team in the NFL must have the best quarterback they could possibly get. No position in the offensive scrimmage is more important than the quarterback. This position is like being the playing coach of the team. He would relay the plays called by the offensive coach and would often alter them depending on the defense played by the opponents. That is how important the quarterback is in every team. A team would need the best quarterback so that they can win. In the NFL, these players are the most recognized and most adored. They have endorsements, expensive cars and houses. They have everything that an individual would want. However, not everyone could be a quarterback. There are specific skills and qualities that you should have to be quarterback. What does it take to be quarterback? • Toughness, both mentally and physically. Football is a very physical sport. Every player in the field should be tough enough to withstand the punishment given by the opposing players. This sport could be painful for some, which is why players in this sport are big and tough. Even quarterbacks who are in the offensive scrimmage must be tough and rough for this sport. Defensive linemen would always find ways to disrupt the offense in the opposing team and that is why every quarterback should be more than just tough. Imagine being chased or bumped by bigger and mean defensive linemen. Every quarterback should always be ready for pain in the field. There is also a lot of trash talking in the football field especially for the quarterbacks; insults and jokes about the life of the quarterback are consistent in every football game. That is why it is important to have mental toughness in this position as well. • Patience. A quarterback is like the point guard of basketball. It is his job to call the right plays and manage the time. A player in this position must be patient enough to call, set up and manage the right plays; he must not rush things. • Strong throwing arm. Every quarterback has his weaknesses; however, every quarterback has a common strength and skill which is having a strong throwing arm. Just try to watch a game in the NFL and calculate how many yards could a quarterback throw the football. • Unique combination of speed, agility and strength. Quarterbacks should be quick and agile to move away from defenders and they should have the proper strength to throw the ball and resist those defensive linemen. • Vision. A quarterback must be able to visualize and see the field better than any other offensive player. He must be able to read the defense and change the offensive plays when needed. He should be able to manage the time and set up the appropriate plays for his team to win. The offense basically relies on this position. A good quarterback could provide the team wins and trophies. |
